The Ooh La La Box is back for the holidays!
Need a holiday surprise? The Ooh La La Box is back as a one time purchase for the holidays!
This box is available in limited quantities. A box of handmade goods the holiday Ooh La La Box has been created to be a stocking in a box. A surprise on Christmas Day containing eight items.
The Ooh La La Box was launched in 2020 as a seasonal subscription. Over the course of three years ten boxes were carefully curated each one containing beautiful hand made goods by incredible makers, artists and designers.
We’ve brought the Ooh La La Box back fro the holidays because so many of our subscribers asked us to. The holiday box was a favourite. For many it was the one surprise they got at Christmas or was a fun gift for themselves or someone else that offered a little holiday delight at a hectic time of the year.
The 2023 holiday box can be purchased online through our store’s website www.themodernmercantile.com for $150 plus tax.
There are two delivery options. Local pick up at The Modern Mercantile located at 539 Fisgard St in the heart of Chinatown in Victoria or a flat fee for mailing within Canada . The boxes will be ready for pickup anytime after December 11th.

Tickets are now on sale for the 34th annual Out of Hand Modern Market. New this year is our VIP Ticket Package. Your VIP ticket package includes general admission entrance with front of the line access, an Out of Hand Modern Market tote bag and free gifts inside. Upgrade your general admission ticket to a weekend pass free of charge at the market. A limited number of VIP tickets are available. Cost is $25 plus tax and online fees.
Daily general admission tickets are $10 plus tax and fees.
Children 12 and under are free of charge but require a ticket to enter.

Out of Hand Modern Market is on now!
On Friday, November 26th at 10am we opened the doors to Out of Hand Modern Market! Over 100 incredible makers, designers and artists are onsite with their fantastic pop up shops in the magical Crystal Garden.
Friday was an amazing day. Our makers were thrilled with the response from shoppers. And our shoppers have sent many lovely messages and told us in person how much they enjoyed their market shopping. We loved watching everyone leave with bags of holiday treasures!
We are very appreciative of the cooperation of all the shoppers who came prepared to show their proof of vaccination. On that note, under the Public Health order proof of vaccine is required. Vaccine QR codes are being scanned upon entry. Masks are mandatory for everyone over the age of 5. Our beautiful venue has high ceilings and wide aisles with hand sanitizer available throughout the venue and at the makers pop-up shops.
We are so very grateful to be back for our 32 Out of Hand Modern Market.

The Out of Hand Modern Market will be back in person for our annual holiday market! Taking place November 26 to 28th at the beautiful Crystal Gardens in Victoria, this much anticipate market will feature over 120 designers, makers and artisans from across BC.
Over the course of the last 15 months, Out of Hand has had to put its in person markets on pause. Sadly cancelling three events, our first Spring Market in 2020, our Holiday Market in 2020 and our Spring Market in 2021. So it is with great excitement we are busy creating a market to remember for this Holiday season.

The Spring Ooh La La Box revealed!
Its officially Spring and as the days get longer and brighter there is both optimism and trepidation in the air as we continue to navigate our pandemic lives. The Ooh La La Box was not part of my plan for 2020 but I now regard is at a pandemic plus, an idea that came to be because of the times we were living in.
This is our fourth Ooh La La Box and completes our first year of seasonal subscription boxes! Each box has represented the season and brought a selection of products different from the last. With your support, we have been able to partner with 48 different makers all from BC.
This season, in addition to bringing items for your home and for you in this box you will see a daisy theme. I am a little daisy crazy, white gerberas are my favourite. White daisies were my mom’s favourite flower too. I love daisies because of their simple cheerful beauty, and because they remind me of her.
Once again we are bringing you eight fabulous items and this time three of the them are exclusive to this box and were made in collaboration with the makers. Just a week after we sadly announced the cancellation of the 32nd annual Out of Hand Modern Market, we were uplifted by the enthusiasm of the many subscribers of our Ooh La La Box who received a small representation of our market in their fall box.

An Ooh La La Box exclusive, designer Jillian Schumarcher created this pair of stacking bracelets exclusively for this box. Just about every single day, I am wearing stacking bracelets, my wrist feels naked without them. These bracelets are pretty special as they are not only stylish but calming as well. This honey is unbeelievable 😉 I love it in my tea and my husband loves it in his coffee. Lately I have been loving it drizzled over cheese! I am a devout tea drinker. This tea is a personal favourite of mine. Margit and Victor of Westholme are the first (and only) commercial organic tea grower in Canada. Unbeknownst to me when Olds Cool Designs was selected for Out of Hand, Wendy Yates its creator is my cousins’ cousin and we had on occasion to vacationed together when we were young. Fast forward a few years (I won’t tell you how many) and I am delighted to include this little treasure in this box. Wendy uses found silver pieces to create very cool new pieces. Use this Beau TEA Ful Silver Teaspoon with your tea and honey. I hope it makes you smile each time you use it. Value $21.50
Infinity Scarf by KOME Designs, Vancouver
Exclusive to this box, designer Kjaer Pedersen designed this beautiful scarf. Adding a scarf to any outfit gives another dimension, it can dress it up or dress it down. This infinity scarf can be worn many different ways. You can see my preference in the attached photo – one tight loop, one long loop. Years ago, I had a favourite scarf very similar to this one that I wore so much the people in my life begged me to retire it. This one may end up in the same category! Value $40.00
Orange or Mint Melts from Rock Coast Confections, Saanich
Chocolate goes with just about everything. Made by confectioner Amber Isles these chocolates are melt in your mouth good. Handmade with 54% ethically and sustainably sourced dark chocolate, these are all vegan and free of artificial flavours and colours. Eating these melts is good for the body and the soul. Value $6
Yunomi Pottery Cup
Pottery takes time to create. For the Ooh La La Box order, three potters were asked to create a Yunomi Cup. They have created three distinctly different designs. I chose a Yunomi style cup because in the coming days and weeks, wrapping you hand around a of your favourite hot drink will warm up the day. The other reason I chose this style of cup is for its versatility, it can be used for many other things – as a vase, succulent planter, a toothbrush holder, desk organizer, etc. Value $30 to $40.

The Ooh La La Box was an idea developed after our Spring Out of Hand (Ooh) Modern Market was cancelled. It’s an entirely different way to bring makers and shoppers together. I am excited the idea is now a reality and so glad our subscribers love their boxes!
We worked with eight amazing makers to create the first Ooh La La Box. It’s a small representation of the beautiful hand made goods found at Out of Hand Modern Market. It is inspired by summer fun and sun, the colour pink, and a few personal inspirations and preferences – raspberries remind me of my grandmother’s backyard, the scent of plumeria transports me to Maui, I love sweet treats and cocktails, gorgeous jewellery, and being in the company of family and friends on warm summer evenings.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10th. While we are all staying safe by staying home, we can still surprise the moms in our lives. This market is the perfect time to shop for and have the items delivered for Mother’s Day.

Spring Market Cancelled
It is with sadness and disappointment that we announce that our Spring Market has been cancelled in response to the recommended suspension of all mass gatherings over 250 people due to COVID-19.
We were excited to add a Spring Market and to be creating a new tradition for our market shoppers – an opportunity to shop for, or spend the day with your mom, on the Mother’s Day weekend. After months of planning, this market was to take place in the big barn at Saanich Fairgrounds featuring shopping, eating, and making, with over 70 artists and makers, food trucks, coffee cart, live music and a floral workshop all onsite.
While this market is cancelled we strongly encourage you to shop these artists and makers direct or through the stockists they partner with. Out of Hand Modern Market is pleased to announce our first annual Spring Market on Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9, 2020!
Just in time for Mother’s Day, the market takes place in the RCMP Barn on the Saanich Fairgrounds. In Out of Hand style this big barn will be transformed into a wonderful Spring Market with an incredible array of beautiful goods made by local makers and artists plus live music, a coffee bar and food options.
Tickets go on sale through our website on April 1, 2020 for $5. Tickets will also be available at the door for $7.

The Last Day!
The 31st annual Out of Hand Modern Market has been a wonderful event so far. Sadly its our last day tomorrow, Sunday, November 24. We will be open at 11am until 4pm. Come by and check out the amazing group of Artists and Makers that are all under one roof at the very festive Crystal Garden.
Join Our Wreath Making Workshop
Out of Hand is full of talented makers and artists. For just an hour why not join them and make your own beautiful holiday wreath. Coming home during the holidays is made even more special when a wreath adorns your door.
Sarah from You Floral will lead this workshop and help you create a stunning wire frame wreath decorated with an array of greenery resulting in a contemporary take on a holiday classic.
The workshop takes place at 3pm on Saturday, November 23 on the upper level of Crystal Garden near the Gourmet Market.
